What drives our passion for Scotland's built heritage

Scotland - what visual images does the name suggest in the mind of a visitor to the country? Almost certainly mountains, but equally likely it will be castles: rugged Highland strongholds set in magnificent scenery, sturdy towers surrounded by the hills of the Borders country, castles perched improbably on the edge of cliffs high above the sea, all kinds of fortification developed over the centuries into grandiose baronial residences, and relatively modest fortified houses still occupied as family homes. Castles have played a crucial role in Scotland's history, and the extraordinary variety of castles and towers spread throughout the country provides a fascinating subject for study. - read our aims and objectives
