SCA Castle Photo Archive - SCA Members only!

In 1999, the Scottish Castles Association (SCA) adopted an Information Centre strategy covering 8 elements as follows: -
  • Image database
  • Masons Marks
  • Skills Register
  • Materials/Products
  • Tools
  • Advice & Guidance
  • Services
  • Information Exchange

At a Members Day at Dairsie Castle, Fife in February 2001 the agreed focus was to concentrate on the image database, which currently contains over 80% of fortified buildings in Scotland where remains, however small, can be seen. The objective is 100%, and the project is supported by Historic Scotland and the RCAHMS, with the latter supplying photographs of sites not yet covered by the SCA. Supplementing the database is the work of Andrew Spratt. He is the custodian of Dirleton Castle; developed an early interest in Scottish history, and was inspired by the castle reconstruction drawings of Alan Sorrel. In addition to having produced more than 200 reconstruction paintings of castles, battles and other events from Scottish history, Andrew presents history slide shows for schools, history societies and clan associations. All his reconstructions are based on archaeological and architectural evidence and are built up level by level from the surviving ruins or foundations.
