Cruggleton Castle (Wigtown) - Past & Present

Cruggleton Castle (past & present)

Cruggleton Castle (past & present)

This 13th C coastal castle occupies a dramatic cliff-top position near Garlieston. Its extensive site was excavated within recent years and a complex history revealed.

Occupied as late as 16th C it was subsequently robbed out and all that remains is a section of a barrel vault. This was consolidated with an iron brace by the Marquis of Bute in the late 19th C when he was restoring the nearby 12th C Cruggleton Church.

Since his time, however, the vault has continued to deteriorate and has not many years left before it too tumbles into the sea.
