New Dating Sequence for Dunstaffnage Castle

Dunstaffnage Castle

Dunstaffnage Castle

A recent report has altered the accepted dating for Dunstaffnage Castle, Argyll.

Dunstaffnage has been regarded as a round towered, curtain walled castle typical of those of second quarter of the 13th century. This has now been revised.

In fact, Dunstaffnage began life as a simple polygonal enclosure castle with the round angle-towers being added at a later date. An early 13th century date is still applicable but when the towers were added is uncertain.
