Ballinbreich in early 1900s and today – not much seems to have changed but appearance deceptive

Situated on the coast near Newburgh this 14th century castle is in a bad state of repair. It originally consisted of a tower to which additions were made in the 15th and 16th centuries.

In its final form it was a 3-storied L-plan castle with a rectangular courtyard with buildings on 3 sides and a curtain wall closing the fourth. It is distinguished by some very fine masonry and a liberal supply of gun loops.

The whole was surrounded by a moat. A chapel can be noted on the second floor
