Carnwath Motte (Lanark) - Past & Present

Carnwath Motte

Carnwath Motte

Carnwath Church was built by William de Somerville before 1165 on which date he gifted it to Glasgow. This provides good dating for the construction of his motte. It was abandoned for the nearby Couthally Castle, itself now a total ruin. The trees which once covered the motte have been removed.
