Stonebyres Castle, Lanarkshire. A imposing 15th century castle (extreme left of picture) of elongated plan built above a ravine and much added to in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Nigel Tranter considered it to have been one of the largest castles he had visited.
Stonebyres was abandoned after the great war and was demolished in the 1930s. The estate has been broken up into small holdings and site is now almost impossible to discover.
